Log aggregation in large datacenter environments requires the ability to deal with both structured and unstructured logs from a variety of sources, including in house developed services, third party software, operating systems, and network devices. Syslog, a widely used application level protocol for log messages, supports encoding of both structured and unstructured logs and multiple transports, and is a solid tool for log routing and aggregation.
