Bottlerocket OS - a container-optimized Linux

Bottlerocket is a free and open source Linux distribution purpose-built for hosting containers. Since its launch in 2020, Bottlerocket has been adopted by companies large and small as a platform for running their containerized workloads in production.

It has only what you need to run containers reliably, and is built with standard open source components. Bottlerocket-specific additions focus on reliable updates and on its management and configuration API.

Some notable features include:

  • API access for configuring your system
  • Fast and reliable image-based system updates
  • Defense-in-depth protections such as a read only root filesystem, minimized attack surface, and more
  • Built in integration with container orchestration platforms

This talk will provide an overview of Bottlerocket, covering some of the benefits of using a container-optimized OS. We will cover how Bottlerocket is similar to general purpose Linux distributions and point out the ways it is different. During the talk we'll get hands on and show what it is like to use and administer Bottlerocket nodes. We will provide all the details on how to get involved and participate in the community. We'd love for you to join the Bottlerocket open source project
