Maxim Van de Wynckel
Hi! 👋 I’m Maxim, a researcher at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel with a passion for indoor positioning systems and location-based services. This all began nearly a decade ago when I got hopelessly lost during my internship at the University Hospital in Brussels. I accidentally wandered into an area that still gives me nightmares. That day, I vowed to make indoor navigation better. What I didn’t realise at the time was just how complex and costly it is to build these systems.
Over the years, my work has focused on tackling these challenges. I specialise in making indoor navigation systems interoperable and more discoverable, so developers can use them without unnecessary hassle.
In 2020, I created the OpenHPS framework as a sandbox for experimenting with new ideas. Through it, I’ve developed tools like SemBeacon and contributed to various specifications aimed at simplifying indoor navigation. It’s been a journey of ups and downs, but step by step, we’re moving towards a future where getting lost indoors is a thing of the past.
If you’re interested in indoor positioning or fancy a chat over a Belgian beer, let’s connect at FOSDEM! 🍺
